Artisanal and Small Scale Mining: Challenges and Opportunities

In many developing countries, artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) is largely a poverty-driven activity which plays an important economic role. It is estimated that in the order of 13 million people in about 30 countries are directly engaged in small-scale mining, a significant proportion of whom are women and children. A further 80 to 100 million people across the developing world could depend on small-scale mining for some aspects of their livelihoods. This paper presents an overview of the issues and challenges facing the ASM stakeholder community across the world.
