Site Visits to Community Projects
Friday, June 9th (morning/early afternoon):

PUERTO BAHIA FOUNDATION:

Description: The Puerto Bahia Foundation was established in 2008 as a branch of Sociedad Portuaria Puerto Bahia.  The Foundation aims to contribute to the generation of programs and projects aiming to support the development of local communities under the direct influence of the project, including Pasacaballos, Ararca, Santa Ana, Barú, Bocachica and Caño del Oro. Today, nearly 1,500 families in these communities have benefited from the various programs and projects that the Foundation has been developing with social investments of over $ 9,000 million.

MANUFACTURE WORKSHOP – ARARCA

Production unit for the manufacture and sales of industrial uniforms.  The workshop has the necessary equipment to manufacture garments, including men and women’s shirts for operators and office workers, industrial overalls, polo shirts and school uniforms.

FISH FARMING – ATARRAYA ARARCA

Promotes the development of new income generation activities for the fishing community, including semi-intensive fish farming, and the raising and sales of red tilapia.

FISH FARMING – ATARRAYA PASACABALLOS

This project began in June 2016. To date, the following activities have been carried-out: Beneficiaries: Fishermen members of the Association of Fishermen of Pasacaballos – AGROPES.

ECOPETROL:

Description: Ecopetrol is an integrated oil & gas company.  The firm is not only the largest company in Colombia, but also among the top 50 oil companies in the world, and one of the four principal petroleum companies in Latin America.

Besides Colombia – where it generates over 60% of the national production – it has exploration and production activities in Brazil, Peru and the US (Gulf of Mexico). Ecopetrol owns the largest refinery in Colombia, and most of the pipeline and multi-product pipeline network is in the country.  The company is significantly increasing its participation in bio-fuels.

CENTER FOR INTEGRAL TRAINING IN CRITICAL TASKS

The project is a response to the need for a comprehensive training in critical tasks of the petrochemical industry.  This training is offered in a Center that includes training scenarios, which recreate real working environments and risks. The Cartagena experience will be replicated in Barrancabermeja where Ecopetrol also operates.

TRANSAMBIENTAL S.A.S.:

Description: Transambiental is a mass passenger transport company, which is currently qualified as operator number 3 of the Mass Transportation Integrated System (SITM) of the city of Cartagena, TransCaribe.

To date, the company has a fleet of 100 vehicles, among padrones and busetones, covering 6 routes in the city.  Once the implementation of the System is completed, the organization will have a total of 212 vehicles.  Since the arrival of the SITM to Cartagena, Transambiental has worked to formalize the transportation sector.  It has also applied new technologies for transporting passengers, and has focused on ways to reduce the environmental impact in the territory, as well as to promote a client-centered approach aiming to better understand and satisfy the citizens´ needs.

CULTURAL CABILDO CORPORATION:

Description: The Cultural Cabildo Corporation is an organization focused on cultural work with the African Diaspora in Colombia. They carry out projects and several affirmative actions for Afro- descendant populations. Since 2014, they have disseminated information regarding the International Decade for People of African Descent declared by the UN, basing all their contents on national, local and international guidelines of public policies for the Afro population. Since 2008, they led the Caribbean Cultural Market in order to support the insertion of music and dance groups in national and international markets.

In 2007 the Corporation started a training program in music and dance directed at young people (men and women) in the city of Cartagena. The results from the first training process allowed the consolidation of a new proposal that transcended artistic training and included a component of psychosocial care and the construction of individual and collective life plans.

TAMBORES DE CABILDO

The school of La Boquilla begins to operate in 2010 and currently more than 60 children have been educated through a methodology that puts emphasis on leadership, appropriation of knowledge related to the African heritage and reflections on the influence of culture in human well-being and development.

COMPAS CARTAGENA:

Description: COMPAS is a Colombian company that offers logistic and port services to cargo ships, as well as entrepreneurs who are looking for an ally for their trade operations. It is the only multipurpose port network in Colombia with six port terminals in the country. COMPAS aims to provide innovative, quality logistical services, satisfying the needs of their clients through qualified, committed staff, with processes focused on sustainability, protecting the interest of shareholders and complying with legislation and regulations.

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

This initiative is intended to promote the farming of biofortified cassava, sweet potato and cowpea, in order to increase food security and rural development in farmers, through technologies based on the eco-efficient management of soil and crops. To date, 35 producers have benefited in Mahates, Bolivar.

PHOENIX PROJECT

This program aim is to transform the spaces of nearby area of COMPAS, through the recovery of the road infrastructure, control of public areas occupied by trucks, recovery of pedestrian zones and social intervention to improve security and safety and strengthen the relationship with the community in El Bosque neighborhood.

Cartagena’s origin as a port city makes the Port of Cartagena a decisive player in all local, social, industrial, economic and touristic developments. PROJECTS PORT OF CARTAGENA FOUNDATION

Seven districts of Cartagena, considered communities of high social vulnerability, benefit from opportunities for socioeconomic inclusion. The Foundation is based on processes of self-sustainability and integral human development. During the visit, we will get to know projects aimed at promoting integral human development, focused on the family and the environment.
