The negative impacts of extractive industry projects fall predominantly on women rather than men and are much more significant than generally recognized, including the breakdown of family relations and a significant increase in family tensions and domestic violence associated with the arrival of projects in poor communities. It is possible to increase the benefits and reduce the negative impacts for women, thereby improving both the relationship of the extractive operation with the surrounding community and the direct and indirect effects of EI operations on women and their families. As part of this ongoing work, the World Bank Oil, Gas, and Mining Unit commissioned this research to examine these issues in Peru. The publication provides an overview of lessons learned and issues to consider when integrating gender into extractive project design and operations.
