CommDev’s initiatives range from capacity building for stakeholders, supporting the design of community development strategies, recommending structures for community foundations, building the capacity of local and regional government to manage royalty flows, developing small business to be included in the supply chain of extractive industry projects, promoting general local economic development; and programs on the environment, gender and HIV/AIDS.

CommDev supports the following business lines:

Empowering communities to make them more effective (reliable and durable) partners

  • stakeholder meeting support, facilitator training
  • build capacity for monitoring by local communities

Supporting sustainable community development strategies

  • fund stakeholder groups to produce strategies for the life of the mine/pipeline
  • provide an effective, integrated, tripartite development framework

Supporting local civil society organizations

Creating economic opportunities

  • work with companies to increase local content, conducting mapping exercises to identify opportunities
  • supplier and SME development, entrepreneur training, and certification

Improving local/regional governance

Enhancing capacity of community to manage social impact of extractive industry

  • empower women, redress the gender bias against women receiving benefits

CommDev draws on the depth and breadth of expertise of all of the World Bank Group institutions, as well as the experience of partners, to develop innovative programs of assistance. Focusing primarily on Africa, CommDev will fund projects elsewhere that will generate substantial knowledge and lessons learned.
