Conner provided a brief overview of the IFC Against AIDS program, which was begun five years ago to help IFC clients mitigate the risk and impact of HIV/AIDS on their operations. John Middleton, Senior Environmental Specialist for the IFC, discussed the HIV/AIDS Guide for the Mining Sector, a resource which offers practical advice and tools for mining companies to manage the impact of HIV/AIDS in the workplace. Middleton spoke about the rationale behind the document before detailing plans for its further rollout. Both Dr. Sixtus Mulenga, Vice President for Open Pits, Mineral Resources, Safety & Environment at Konkola Copper Mines in Zambia, and Rosalind Kainyah, Director of Public and Corporate Affairs for the De Beers Group, reflected on their corporate experiences of implementing programs for HIV/AIDS and related health issues, with an emphasis on partnerships among their respective companies, governments and communities.
