Human Rights, Indigenous Rights and the Extractive Industry Workshop Report

This workshop in Calgary addressed indigenous rights in North America.This report highlights the key messages raised by speakers throughout the workshop and seeks to give a synopsis of the presentations, panel discussions and question and answer sessions.
The objectives of the workshop were to:
- Gain a better understanding of “indigenous” rights and different cultures;
- Explore contemporary legal issues related to indigenous rights;
- Discuss the relationship between indigenous communities, land rights, and the extractive industry in North
- America; and,
- Provide a forum for attendees to discuss the challenges and solutions to a variety of scenarios.
This report is accompanied by a Tookit which provides managers with a template that can be used and adapted to conform to a company’s policy or position on human rights and applicable domestic laws and regulations. The Toolkit also provides assistance in developing or enhancing existing company policy.
