Environmental Monitoring and Performance

June 1995
Australian Government Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources

This module of the Sustainable Minerals Publications Series, previously titled the Best Practice Environmental Management in Mining series, explores the importance of monitoring in achieving and maintaining environmental performance. Monitoring is a necessary component of any management system and provides solid data by which to assure regulators, the community and other stakeholders that environmental performance is being achieved. The booklet provides an overview of the design, implementation and costs associated with an effective monitoring program. A further section deals with environmental performance assessment. Case studies are used to demonstrate how environmental monitoring has contributed to successful environmental management at different sites.

This module gives an overview of best practice in environmental monitoring and performance in the mining industry. The aim is to foster best practice principles throughout the industry. The module draws on experience of companies in Australia which already aspire to and use best practice.
