The oil and gas industry operates in some of the most challenging places in the world, and can face complex human rights related issues.
The subject of human rights has risen rapidly on the oil and gas industry agenda. Recognizing the importance of this issue, IPIECA members developed this Training Toolkit to raise awareness of human rights issues in the oil and gas industry. The Toolkit is targeted at country managers, asset managers, business managers, and other personnel that would benefit from learning about human rights issues and the way in which human rights issues have potential implications for oil and gas operations.
The Training Toolkit provides managers with a template that can be used and adapted to conform to a company’s policy or position on human rights and applicable domestic laws and regulations. This Toolkit is not intended to be an in-depth instruction on how to conduct human rights training.
The Toolkit consists of four sections:
- A presentation with the key messages for use in a training session
- A workbook to be used in conjunction with the presentation
- A trainer’s manual
- 4 A resource guide
Company representatives should review the trainer’s manual prior to using the Training Toolkit.
The trainer’s manual provides information on how to finalize the materials for a company’s specific purposes. For example:
- Companies will want to customize the materials to reflect their organization’s policies and operations. More details on areas for customization are included in the ‘Getting Started’ section of the trainer’s manual.
- The Toolkit is divided into topics, so that a company may extract a section that covers a specific issue of interest. Alternatively the training material may be presented in its entirety to provide a broad overview of human rights issues.
- Human rights issues are complex. Often, there are not easy answers. Therefore, companies are encouraged to facilitate interactive sessions when using the training materials. Included in the appendix of the trainer’s manual are example dilemmas that can be used throughout the training sessions to foster discussion. Companies will want to use these dilemmas as a template, and substitute examples that best reflect their operations to help the material be most relevant to the trainee.
