2001, Social Accountability International (SAI)

Social Accountability 8000 (SA8000) is a global standard to improve human rights in the workplace. SA8000 is a certification standard, based on the core conventions of the International Labour Organization. With 1,300 certifications, SA8000 operates across 50 sectors in more than 55 countries, covering 600,000 workers worldwide. Launched in 1997, Social Accountability 8000 was developed through a multi-stakeholder process involving trade unions, NGOs, companies and academics. Social Accountability International is an accreditation body that certifies local organizations that in turn certify workplaces. To date, SAI has accredited 14 certification bodies, allowing them to certify facilities as SA8000-compliant.
